The Three-Card Tarot Spread
The three-card spread is the best place to begin. It's quick, flexible, and teaches you the single most important skill in tarot: reading cards together as a story rather than one at a time.
The classic layout: Past · Present · Future
- Card 1 — Past: what led here; the roots of the situation.
- Card 2 — Present: where things stand now; the heart of the matter.
- Card 3 — Future / Outcome: where the current path is heading.
How to read it, step by step
- Shuffle while holding a clear, open question in mind.
- Lay three cards left to right, face up.
- Read each in its position — then connect them into one arc.
- Notice the movement: does the story build, resolve, or warn?
Example: The Tower → The Star → The Sun reads as
"upheaval, then healing, leading to genuine joy" — a hopeful arc even though it opens with a hard card.
Other three-card variations
- Situation · Action · Outcome — great for decisions.
- Mind · Body · Spirit — a check-in.
- You · The other person · The connection — relationships.
- Strengths · Weaknesses · Advice — problem-solving.
