The Celtic Cross Tarot Spread
The Celtic Cross is tarot's most famous layout — ten cards that examine a question from every angle. It was popularised by A. E. Waite in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910). Master the three-card spread first; then this one rewards you.
The 10 positions
The spread has two parts — the Cross (six cards) and the Staff (four cards).
The Cross
- Present — the heart of the matter, right now.
- Challenge — what crosses you; the obstacle (read upright either way).
- Foundation — the root or distant past beneath it.
- Recent past — what's just passing away.
- Crown / Goal — the best possible outcome or aim.
- Near future — what's approaching.
The Staff
- Yourself — your attitude or role.
- Environment — other people and outside influences.
- Hopes & fears — often two sides of the same coin.
- Outcome — where the whole picture leads.
The Celtic Cross is less about ten separate meanings and more about zooming out
— reading the relationships between positions to see the whole story.
